Uganda: Arrests of Men on Sodomy Charges- by: IGLHRC, 10/17/06: http://www.iglhrc.org/cgi-bin/iowa/article/takeaction/resourcecenter/318.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Over the last few weeks, there have been at least five arrests made in Uganda pursuant to the country's law that criminalize homosexual acts between consenting adults. It is unclear where the men remain in detention and under what conditions. While it is unclear whether these arrests are related to the recent "outings" of gay men and lesbians in the Ugandan tabloid, The Red Pepper, they demonstrate the level of homophobia, much of state-sponsored, that still exists in Uganda.

"The Paris-based author, Hamid Aqabi, wrote that homosexuality was
?part and parcel of our society.? He called on the parliament to
extend more rights to gay people and went as far as to suggest that
the Yemeni government should consider allowing gay marriages, just
like in the West." <br><br> ?In Yemen there is no gay community, because according to Islamic
Sharia it?s prohibited,? Mohammed Al-Qadhi, a Sanaa-based journalist

No Gubernamental Natalia Gómez Quintero/UNIV / Homophobia: Hate crimes between 1995 and 2008, there were 628 hate crimes against gays. Judges are lenient with criminals, as denounced by an NGO- by Natalia Gómez Quintero/UNIV, www.noroeste.com.mx, on 05/18/10: http://www.noroeste.com.mx/publicaciones.php?id=583722&id_seccion=185 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
MEXICO:(UNIV>._The sentence of Ricardo Camacho Gómez should have been up to 60 years, but the judge considered that his case had been a homicide without malice or profit. The sentence given in 2002, for the murder which he carried out against Fabián Espinosz Yáñez, who was homosexual, was a punishment of 17 1/2 years in prison. In the end, he only served a little more than 7 years. It was December 8, 2001 when Fabián, 18 years old, was found murdered in a hotel in the Colonia Roma (a district of Mexico City). The judicial report indicated that there was evidence of sadism and that the cause of death had been asphyxiation . Today the family and friends of Fabián fear for their lives, since the murderer confessed, of what was considered a crime due to homophobia, and he is free before expected thanks to legal sophisms."<br><br>
"Mexico stands in second place in Latin America with the greatest number of homophobic crimes, surpassed by only Brazil. Some estimates indicate that in Mexico there might be an underreporting in that for each reported crime, there are two more committed, meaning that the number of hate crimes due to homophobia would rise to 1,884," says the report.

There are two reasons why 11-year-old Chikumbutso Zuze never sees his three sisters, why he seldom has a full belly, why he sleeps packed sardinelike with six cousins on the dirt floor of his aunt's thatched mud hut.
<br><br>
One is AIDS, which claimed his father in 2000 and his mother in 2001. The other is his father's nephew, a tall, light-complexioned man whom Chikumbutso knows only as Mr. Sululu.
<br><br>
It was Mr. Sululu who came to his village five years ago, after his father died, and commandeered all of the family's belongings - mattresses, chairs and, most important, the family's green Toyota pickup, an almost unimaginable luxury in this, one of the poorest nations on earth. And it was Mr. Sululu who rejected the pleas of the boy's mother, herself dying of AIDS, to leave the truck so that her children would have an inheritance to sustain them after her death.

African myths about homosexuality A political spat about gay rights in Zimbabwe is symptomatic of the homophobia prevalent in many African communities - by Blessing-Miles Tendi guardian.co.uk,Tuesday 23 March 2010; http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/mar/23/homophobia-africa-gay-rights/print (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"The standard explanation offered by Africans opposed to gay rights is that homosexuality is alien to their culture and was introduced to Africa by European colonialists. A good deal of African-American homophobia relies on the same justification. But late 19th-century records on Africa and African oral history show that homosexual practices existed in pre-colonial Africa. One case in point are the Azande people in the north-east of modern-day Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where it was acceptable for kings, princes and soldiers to take young male lovers." <br><br> "Along with the moralisms of Traditional African religions, Christianity and Islam ? which were brought to Africa by European missionaries and Arab traders respectively ? facilitated homophobia because they regard homosexuality as sin. Today religion shapes many African and African-American social and political designs. Churches in Africa are major players in the production of homophobia. In black America, churches are the most dominant homophobic institutions. Not all African and African-American churches, however, are intolerant to homosexuals."
