650. Muslims protest for sexual rights in 12 nations - Rex Rockner International News # 864 on 11/15/10 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"Rising conservatism fueled by militarism, increasing inequalities, the politicization of religion and Islamophobia have strengthened patriarchal and extremist religious ideologies that use sexuality as a tool of oppression," organizers said. "This has manifested itself in various forms over the last year, be it the revocation of the permit for the regional Asia Conference of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Association by the police in Indonesia, or the harassment of conference participants by radical Islamic groups, or political pressure on a women's group promoting women's rights in Islam in Malaysia, or women like Sakineh Ashtiani being sentenced to death by stoning in Iran, or killings of hundreds of women and transsexuals in Turkey under the pretext of honor."

Full translation of article Translation by Jack Siebert, NIJC/SF volunteer

The blood-letting continues in Honduras in the presence of international passivity. Now it has been the turn of Wilmer García Alvarado, an LGBT youth activist and volunteer for the organization National Youth Forum , who was murdered in the town of San Pedro Sula. Unfortunately, and in spite of its growing recognition, the government of Lobo does not appear to be very interested in solving murders such as that of Walter Tróchez, which go unpunished. Throughout the past weeks, we have heard rumors of new episodes of violence, such as the murder of a transsexual women also in San Pedro Sula or that of a witness in the case against a policeman accused of the stabbing of another transsexual woman. New murder of an LGBT activist and opponent of the Honduran regime

We, trans individuals are subjected to hate murders. Hate speech in media continues to exist intensively. Police continues to use transphobic violence against trans individuals. Judicial authorities reward our murderers with sentence decreases. Law-makers and decision-makers ignore us and our democratic demands. Transphobic hatred and discrimination are widespread in areas like education, health, employment and access to services. Our freedom of movement is prevented, our freedom of expression is limited and we are faced by social pressure, social exclusion and violence. In short, we are being "hated" just because of our existence!

While Honduran authorities have been prompt in signing international agreements pledging to curb violence and protect vulnerable groups, attacks on transgender people ? often targeted because their looks and demeanor challenge prevailing sex-role stereotypes ? continue to be commonplace in the country.

The Advocate has more:
Trans activist Cynthia Nicole was shot in January, and most recently two unidentified men assaulted Barbara Paola, an outreach worker for an LGBT organization in Tegucigalpa. Joshua, 19, told the organization that police punched her in the face, beat her with a baton, and broke a broomstick against her back before throwing her into jail. Other reports show that police stand by while trans people are attacked in the streets.

However, when confronted on such abuses, officers refer to vague language in the Law on Police and Social Affairs to protect morality and guard against ?public scandal? and those ?who go against modesty? to justify their actions or inaction. Similar policies in other Latin American countries like Colombia have been stopped after courts deemed them too broad.

Los principales reproductores de ese odio en el país, según los organismos defensores de gays y lesbianas son la familia, las escuelas, la prensa y la iglesia.

Pero ese odio ha traído consecuencias. Introduction

The aim of the research was to understand the lived lives of lesbian identified woman in Tshwane (Pretoria). The idea was to investigate their psychosocial and sexual histories through in depth qualitative interviews. Most funded research projects exclude lesbian, bisexual and transgendered women, since the focus is mainly on MSM. This translates into a lack of appropriate service provision to lesbian identified woman. The health, specifically sexual health issues of lesbian women, is often completely ignored, especially when it comes to HIV issues.
