India Urged to Repeal Homosexuality Law- Voice of America - January 13, 2006- Anjana Pasricha (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Voice of America
New Delhi
A leading human rights watchdog is calling on the Indian government to repeal an old law that bans homosexual sex. Criticism of India's homosexual laws has been triggered by the recent arrest of a group of gay men.
The calls for scrapping the 19th century law follow the arrest this week of four people on charges of homosexuality in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The men have also been accused of running an online gay club.
Homosexuality is illegal in India, and can be punished by up to 10 years in prison.

Lesbian and Gay India
Capital City:New Delhi
Other main cities/resorts:Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmadabad, Kanpur, Nagpur, Lucknow, Pune
Â
Scene & culture:Homosexuality is illegal despite legal a challenge in the Courts in 2004 brought by an Aids charity. Whilst the legal position is uncompromising that does not mean that there is no gay activity. Because pre-marital sexual contact between men and women is very difficult it is quite common and socially accepted for young men to have sex. It is often not defined as sex, though, but masti - or "mischief". Sex is between a husband and wife. As with the Arabs, Indian men doing the active part of a sexual encounter are not condemned, whereas the passive partner is not considered a "man". There are also examples of socially accepted trasvestism in India. There is virtually no gay scene in India. The emphasis is very much into outdoor cruising. However, there are some bars for example the "Voodoo Pub" in Colaba (Bombay) claims to be the only gay bar between Istanbul and Bangkok and is pretty much exclusively gay on Saturdays. Several organisations for gays and lesbians also exist and they occasionally organise events. For more information check out the websites listed below. New Delhi's only gay night is at the enticingly named "Pegs N Pints" in Chandkyapuri on Tuesday nights! Gay and lesbian visitors to India may find the cultural difference too great to bridge but nonetheless India makes for a facinating holiday destination.

There simply ain't no cure for love- India Together 3/6/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)

ATTITUDES TO HOMOSEXUALITY
Ain't no cure for love
If life for homosexuals is limited to choices between prayer, punishment or therapy, where's the good stuff? With support groups that offer homosexuals a space to express thoughts and feelings without making them feel like they need to change. This, rather than pathologising their lives, is what really helps, writes Vinay Chandran.
06 April 2006 - A self-identified homosexual in India gets used to being judged and condemned through three morality-tinted glasses: religion, law and medicine. Religion demands guilt, law pronounces guilt and medicine reinforces guilt. This brings us to a fundamental question: why is medicine so obsessed with 'curing' homosexuality? If life for the homosexual is limited to choices between prayer, punishment or therapy, where's all the good stuff?

Cameroon: Justice Subverted as Seven Men Convicted on Sodomy Charges 6/13/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) has learned that seven of the nine men who have been on trial for homosexuality in Cameroon have been found guilty of "sodomy" and sentenced to a 10- month jail term. Since the men have already been detained in a Kondegui Prison in Yaoundé for more than one year, they are expected to be released shortly for time served. One of the men, Christian Angoula, suffered a homophobic attack by fellow prisoners last week and had to be carried into the courtroom by one of his fellow prisoners. Two of the men--Ayissi Francois and Lamba Marc Lambert--were acquitted of all charges.

Cameroon: Government Refuses to Release Nine Men Acquitted of Homosexuality Charges- IGLHRC (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) has learned that the Cameroonian government has refused to release nine men jailed on charges of homosexuality despite their April 21 acquittal. In a further travesty of justice, the government is forcing the men to stand trial again. The men have been detained in Kondegui Prison in Yaounde for nearly a year. At their initial trial, no witnesses were called and no proof offered by the prosecution, so Judge Tonye, the magistrate overseeing the case, declared the men innocent of all charges. The men expected to be released from prison quickly but the prosecutor's office has refused to order their release and has said that the men will be retried.
