Costa Rica: Cameroon Citizen kept under guard in Costa Rican Hotel dies of AIDS (Agua Buena)--08/3/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
According to Costa Rica's major daily newspaper, La Nacion, a Cameroon
citizen who entered the country illegally, died a few days ago of AIDS
in a Hotel close to the Airport, of AIDS, without ever have been allowed
to go to a Hospital.<br>
The Cameroon citizen whose name was published in La Nacion (but is
withheld here for confidentiality,) arrived in Costa Rica severely ill
about three weeks ago, with a false passport obtained in Guatemala. But
he was never taken to a Hospital. It is not even clear if he was ever
seen by a physician in the Hotel where he was kept under guard. <br>
The Costa Rican government is also refusing to cover any costs of
repatriating his body home to Cameroon, and La Nacion indicates that his
family cannot afford to pay the costs. He will be buried in a local
"pauper's grave"<br>
It is clear that authorities were aware that he was severely ill, as the
article states that he had asked authorities to try send him home while
he was still alive, presumably unaware that he also had a right to
receive medical attention.

Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe to Return to the Zimbabwean Boock Fair in 2006- Mask Admin 8/10/05 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
August 10, 2005: <br>The intimidation of GALZ staff during the second last day of the Zimbabwean Book Fair has not at all dampened the spirits of defiant staff members. According to Keith Goddard, the director, GALZ is most definitely exhibiting during the fair without fear in 2006. <br>
Witnesses and GALZ staff reported that despite a week of relative peace and civil interaction between the book fair crowd and the GALZ personnel at their stall, Friday 5th August almost turned nasty when a group of unidentified men who were smartly dressed approached the GALZ stand and announced that "GALZ was not allowed to be at the [Book] Fair". The group of bullies then returned to the Book Fair offices and issued threats against the Book Fair officials for allowing GALZ to participate at the Fair.

IGLHRC Deeply Concerned With Revision of Zimbabwe Criminal Code (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
An announcement by the Zimbabwean government that the criminal code has been amended and includes an expanded definition of the term "sodomy" is of great concern. The new law describes sodomy as anal intercourse between two men and "any act involving physical contact ... that would be regarded by a reasonable person to be an indecent act". The vagueness of this wording means that a kiss, hug or any other physical intimacy between men could be penalized by imprisonment for a period of one year.

Panamanians plan first pride parade - Rex Wokner International (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Panama will see its first gay pride parade June 25. Organized by the New Men and Women Association of Panama, the 3 p.m. Parade for Sexual Diversity will depart from the intersection of VÃ-a España and Vía Argentina and head to Andrés Bello Park. The march has received financial support from two gay bars, a Web site, a gay tchotchke shop, Spain's Triangle Foundation, and GrupoFSM, a corporation that owns the trendy Madrid nightclub Cool.
"Knowing that most marches of this type always start small -- and then grow into carnival-type parties -- we chose a very short path for our march, and we are not planning on having floats or anything like that," said Javier Rodríguez of the organizing group. "We hope that many hetero friends and family will show up. We are inviting everyone. Hence the 'sexual diversity' character of the march."

Zimbabwe: US supports Iran in Rejection Gay Rights Organizations at the UN-2/19/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Excerpt:<br>
Iran's government moved to have the gay and lesbian organizations' applications rejected without discussion, which is largely unheard of at the UN. Although France and Germany voted against the rejection, the U.S. government sided with Iran, and was joined by Cameroon and Zimbabwe, in successfully denying UN access to the gay rights organizations. Instead of creating a coalition of the respectful, the U.S. government helped create a coalition of the hateful. In doing so, the Bush administration joined forces with some of the most repressive regimes in modern history. <br> there is more

Take action in favor of LGBTT at risk in Nicaragua <br>
AmnistÃ-a
Internacional considerarÃ-a presas de conciencia a las personas encarceladas en
aplicaciÃ3n de este artÃ-culo:

Debating Iran- By Scott Long 07/27/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Is there a battle over Iran? In Washington and London, yes. Nations with immense military machines at their disposal argue the merits of peace and war.<br>
So why do the differences of a few lesbian and gay activists in New York matter? Because lesbian and gay Iranians are not abstractions, sheltered from politics - or missiles. Their lives should not be reduced to the agendas of well-meaning strangers in the West.<br>
For eight months, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has researched a report on abuses based on sexual orientation and gender identity in Iran, interviewing dozens in Iran and the diaspora, trying to separate fact from rhetoric and rumor. As a prominent Iranian dissident said last week, "We need cases" - documentation, not speculation.
