Jamaica: The Rasta view on homosexuality?-Wignall's World Mark Wignall 4/22/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
MW: But why must we always assume that male homosexual lovers are
necessarily involved in penetrative sex?
SR: How long could you 'hold out' with a beautiful woman for whom you
have passionate feelings? Confronted bluntly with the unhygienic aspects
of their behaviour, embarrassed defenders of homosexual 'rights' then
try to claim that their relationship need not involve sex. Clearly this
is an attempt to introduce a red herring. No reasonable person can deny
the possibility of deep friendship between persons of the same sex as in
the Biblical example of David and Jonathan.
What is at issue is that the homosexuals descend from this threshold to
physical sexual relations and as a next step in their agenda insist that
not only must society tolerate their right to do whatever pleases them
in the privacy of their bedrooms but must also support them publicly.

2007/04/17 "if you're gay in Jamaica you'r dead" Gay.com (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Amnesty International has publicly condemned recent episodes of violence against persons who are perceived to be gay in Jamaica. The organisation is particularly concerned by reports of mob violence against persons perceived as homosexuals who are targeted because of their appearance or behaviour, which seems to be increasing in frequency.

In compliance with its international obligations stated in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and in the American Convention on Human Rights, Jamaican authorities should send a clear message to society that discrimination against sexual minorities will not be tolerated and that violent episodes will be fully prosecuted. Such assaults are both human rights violations and a threat to the rule of law in Jamaica.

Amnesty International urges the Jamaican government to work closely with human rights defenders and with groups representing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in Jamaica to find solutions to prevent these episodes from occurring again.

Indonesia: HIV/AIDS prevention tough in a secret gay city- 4/19/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Prodita Sabarini, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Rather than having to tell their families and facing the social stigma of being gay and having HIV, they choose to be oblivious and ignore the problem," Yakub said.
In Indonesia, to be out and gay remains a taboo. Gay community members are straightforward about their sexual orientation among themselves. However, facing the social pressure of Indonesia's heterosexist society, they hide their sexual orientation when returning to the mainstream. Most significantly, they also hide their sexual orientation from their families.
Yakub said most of the middle-aged men inside the movie theater lead double lives.

Jamaica Gleaner News
"Our people must be told that the law must have its course and until, if and when (and I pray that it will never be that the law is changed), then we have to abide and play by the rules," said Bishop Blair. "I heard of a case last week where a member of a family went to visit someone and, in visiting the person, was labelled to be homosexual and was thoroughly thrashed. It (did not come out) that the person was not a homosexual until he sought help of members of the security forces, who said they literally had nothing to do with homosexuals," said the Bishop.

Afghanistan: US Country Reports on Human Rights Practices - 2006 3/6/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The law criminalizes homosexual activity; however, the prohibition was only sporadically enforced. However, a recent UNHCR report noted that, homosexual persons commonly hid their sexual orientation. Many observers believed that societal disapproval of homosexuality was partly the cause for the prevalence of rape of young boys. During the year the Taliban published a new set of rules that explicitly forbade the recruitment of young boys for sexual pleasure.
