India: HIV boy thrown out of school- The Telegraph, PRASUN BHATTACHARYA 10/12/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
In a glaring, illegal case of discrimination, as a health department officer put it, a primary school on the southern fringes of the city allegedly drove a Class I student out of the institution and humiliated him by segregating him from his classmates. His crime was that he is HIV-infected.

The 11-year-old boy, a resident of the Baruipur area, was detected with thalassaemia when he was nine. He receives regular blood transfusions at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.

Letter to Congressional Caucus about US support for Ugandan homophobia-HRW 10/11/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Dear Congressmen:
Human Rights Watch is gravely concerned by an expanding pattern of attacks in Uganda upon the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. In recent weeks, members of President Yoweri Musevenis government have called for enforcement of the countrys draconian sodomy lawwhich punishes consensual same-sex sexual relations with up to life in prisonand have reportedly threatened to pass new laws extending and expanding the reach of punishment. Such threats are part of a long-standing pattern of harassment and state condemnation of people based on their sexual orientation and gender identity.

The resultant atmosphere threatens health as well as human rights. It also threatens to drive further underground populations affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic and further to thwart and silence prevention efforts directed at them. These attacks, moreover, come in a context where HIV-prevention efforts that condemn both the use of condoms and the fact of homosexual conduct have apparently been funded by the US government. We therefore urge you:

Uganda: International Human Rights Group Demands Accountability from U.S. HIV/AIDS Fund- 10/10/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Is the U.S. Financing Homophobia in Africa?<br?
October 10, 2007
For Immediate Release
Contact: Hossein Alizadeh,
IGLHRC Communications Coordinator, 212-430- 6016

(New York, October 10, 2007) - The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) has uncovered evidence that the U.S. government has funded groups in Uganda that actively promote discrimination against lesbians and gay men. In a letter to U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Mark Dybul, IGLHRC has criticized funding the groups and has asked for assurances that U.S. government funds are not being used to support homophobic organizations anywhere in the world.

IGLHRC's investigation followed a series of distressing events in Uganda. At an August 16 press conference, Sexual Minorities of Uganda (SMUG), a coalition of LGBT groups, launched Let us Live in Peace Campaign, calling for understanding and respect of sexual minorities. SMUG's campaign was met with an increase in hate speech by religious groups. The primary instigator of the backlash was Pastor Martin Ssempa, leader of the Makerere University Community Church and spokesman for the Interfaith Family Culture Coalition Against Homosexuality in Uganda. Ssempa organized an August 21 rally in Kampala, the country's largest city, at which more than one hundred demonstrators, including several government officials, demanded official action against LGBT people. Ssempa has called homosexual conduct, "a criminal act against the laws of nature," and has said that, "there should be no rights granted to homosexuals in this country."

Interview with an Iranian Lesbian in order to convey her Protest to the World 5/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
By Darya and Baran
Translated by Ava

To all the lesbian women of Iran:
As of this day we will walk in the path of freedom, hand in hand, with linked arms, firm steps and heads held high. We will break the chains that bind us chains of captivity, chains of fear. With solidarity, strength, and pride we shall stand up for life in freedom. The time of censorship, oppression and isolation has come to an end. The time has come to speak courageously of injustice, tyranny, and violation. If you and I don't air our cries of pain and sorrow to the world, we will die in a prison of terror. With one voice let us convey the problems of a lesbian Iranian woman to the world. If you and I remain silent, not only our rights but those of countless others shall be sacrificed. What are you waiting for? Together, let us cry freedom.
If you are interested in working with us, contact us at: info@irqo.net

*For confidentiality reasons, names have been changed in the following interview.
Please introduce yourself, in whatever way you prefer, to our readers.
I am Taraneh, an Iranian lesbian. I'm 48 years old. 17 years ago I became a refugee in Europe.
When did you realize you were a lesbian?
From childhood I preferred to have girlfriends rather than boyfriends.
Why did you become a refugee?
I am a lesbian. For this reason I was arrested countless times. I went to prison and ultimately sentenced to death [by hanging]. I remember the first time I was arrested; I was 21 and a student in Esfahan. I was making love with my girlfriend in a car when I was arrested. I was kicked out of university. I spent 3 months in prison. I was whipped. Eventually I went to India to continue my education. But my family did not want me to stay there so I had to return to Iran. From there began the rest of my problems.

Iran: The Queerest Denial [Column] Wall Street Journal, By Bret Stephens Tuesday 10.02.07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The Islamic Republic of Iran has been doing a brisk business in harassing, entrapping, lashing, imprisoning and executing homosexuals since nearly the moment it came to power in 1979, with little notice in the West beyond the occasional human-rights report. so when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made the startling claim at Columbia University last week that "we do not have homosexuals in Iran like you do in your country," it offered what could have been a learning opportunity to those who think Iran is just another misunderstood regime with an equally misunderstood president. Djibouti- Canadian IRB: RESPONSES TO INFORMATION REQUESTS (RIRs) 2/26/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Homosexuality is illegal in Djibouti (AI July 2006; Canada 20 Dec. 2006; UK 15 Nov. 2006). In an 18 October 2004 article, Behind the Mask (BTM), "a non-profit media organisation publishing a news website intended for gay and lesbian affairs in Africa" (BTM n.d.), indicates that public attitudes and laws concerning homosexuality in Djibouti are "far from liberal" and that this is perhaps as a result of the influence of Islamic law in the country (ibid. 18 Oct. 2004). Cited in the article, a homosexual man from Djibouti states that although there are many gay and lesbian persons living in Djibouti, they live "undercover, unconfident and in fear" (ibid.). The man also notes that there is no organization in Djibouti to support the rights of gays and lesbians in the country (ibid.)
