Transgender issues get greater respect~ but anatomy remains destiny- FAIR - By Julie Hollar 11/30/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The increased attention and apparent seriousness with which media are taking transgender stories today is remarkable; the idea of CNN inviting a transgender media critic to explain to them on the air the appropriate terminology to use when covering transgender issues (11/29/05), for example, would have been unthinkable not long ago, and both the Associated Press and New York Times style guides have recently added editorial guidelines to ensure that transgender people are covered using the name and pronouns they prefer, regardless of their biological or anatomical status?in other words, calling a transgender woman ?she,? for example, regardless of whether she?s had any sort of surgery, taken hormones, or looks masculine or feminine to the reporter. It may seem like a small or simple detail, but for transgender people who had long been denied the right to define themselves?with media calling them by names and pronouns they don?t identify with?it?s an important step in the right direction.

Iraq: Our Man In Baghdad-Gay City News- By: MICHAEL T. LUONGO 11/21/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Hassan was worried I was mad at him, disappointed he did not meet me before, and I assured him that I was only happy to hear he was alive. And in the end, he accepted that we could not meet not merely because of the danger, but more importantly because the time had passed and the logistics could no longer be arranged.

The American official and I looked at each other as I hung up the phone. Reminding me that gay men are "sitting ducks" at checkpoints if they have to wait for long periods of time entering the Green Zone, he assured me I had made the right decision.

22 Members of Congress Protest Sodomy Death Sentence In Nigeria-Rex Wokner 8/1/05 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
A group of federal lawmakers who are leaders on international and human rights issues today wrote to Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo to voice strong concern over the recent case of a Nigerian man sentenced to death by stoning for sodomy.
The 50-year-old man was accused of having sex with another man, arrested and brought before a Shari'a or Islamic court. After being acquitted of the charge for lack of evidence, the man admitted to the judge, when asked, that he had had sex in the past with men. On that basis, he was convicted and is now on death row awaiting execution by stoning.
The letter was signed by 22 House Democrats and states, in part, that the "specific circumstances of this conviction are highly problematic, and, in fact, we believe that the execution by stoning or by any other means of any individual for private, adult, consensual sexual activity is grossly inhumane and well below the standards that any civilized society should uphold."

Iran: Arsham Parsi's speech at Canadian for Choice discussion panel in Toronto-HIV- IRQO-11/24/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
In the past, my speeches were mostly from a legal standpoint and I talked about the legal and social conditions of Iranian queers. This is my first speech on sexual health and the Iranian queer population.

In Iran, there is a misconception that homosexuality is the cause of AIDS. People think AIDS is a Western disease derived from vulgarity, prostitution, and promiscuity. Two years ago, a gay man?s mother told me that the HIV virus is produced as a result of sexual relations between two men. She referred to various newspapers and news articles she had read as evidence. She thought that sexual relations between members of the opposite sex are never risky.
