Human Rights Activists Protest Continued Arrests of Gay Men in Cameroon: Demonstrations in Paris, Pretoria and Washington, D.C.- IGLHRC 12/10/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
(Monday December 10, 2007) - Human rights activists in France, South Africa and the United States descended on Cameroonian embassies in these three countries today to express their anger at a pattern of arrests and harassment of gay men and lesbians in that country. More than 30 people have been arrested in Cameroon in the last two years on charges of homosexuality, despite an October 2006 ruling by the United Nations that termed such arrests to be arbitrary and unfair. Dozens of students, particularly girls and young women, have been expelled from schools as result of their real or perceived sexual orientation.

NICARAGUA SIGUE PENALIZANDO LA HOMOSEXUALIDAD- Nicaragua continues to penalize homosexuality- Inforgay.com 2/14/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)

Cameroon: Government Refuses to Release Nine Men Acquitted of Homosexuality Charges- IGLHRC 5/3/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) has learned that the Cameroonian government has refused to release nine men jailed on charges of homosexuality despite their April 21 acquittal. In a further travesty of justice, the government is forcing the men to stand trial again. The men have been detained in Kondegui Prison in Yaounde for nearly a year. At their initial trial, no witnesses were called and no proof offered by the prosecution, so Judge Tonye, the magistrate overseeing the case, declared the men innocent of all charges. The men expected to be released from prison quickly but the prosecutor's office has refused to order their release and has said that the men will be retried.

Iran: Prevent Execution of Juvenile Offender Prisoner Convicted on Recanted Testimony Now Faces Death- HRW 12/4/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
FYI FROM REX: What follows could lead to my issuing a clarification to an
item in my International News #709. My item was based on a press release from the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission ( http://www.iglhrc.org/site/iglhrc/section.php?id=5&detail=801 ); on followup e-mail conversations with IGLHRC's Iranian communications director, Hossein Alizadeh; and on a very long, confirmatory story by MSNBC ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21821342/ ).

(New York, December 5, 2007) - The Iranian government should prevent the execution of Makwan Mouloudzadeh, who was sentenced to death for crimes allegedly committed when he was aged 13, Human Rights Watch said today. Court authorities in the city of Kermanshah should follow the recent order by the head of the Judiciary to allow judicial review of the case.
On May 25, 2007, Branch Seven of the Penal Court of the city of Kermanshah sentenced Mouloudzadeh, to death for raping three boys in 2000, even though all of his accusers had recanted their statements and he had repudiated his confession as being coerced by the police. Mouloudzadeh, now aged 20, was convicted as a juvenile offender since the crimes were allegedly committed when he was under age 18.
