Indonesia: Gays Fight Sharia Laws- daydreampolitics.org Doug Ireland 10/19/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The article was originally written for Gay City News, New York City's largest weekly gay newspaper.<br><br>
In fact, it is difficult to quantify with any specificity the level of bias-related anti-gay violence in the country because, until the founding of Arus Pelangi, there was no gay group collecting such information in Indonesia. A group called Lambda Indonesia was founded in 1985, sponsored social gatherings, consciousness-raising, and issued a newsletter, but it petered out in the 1990s. Gaya Nusantara is a gay group focusing on health issues like AIDS, and operating mainly in Surabaya, East Java. Yayasan Srikandi Sejati, founded in 1998, focuses specifically on health issue of the transgendered, running a free health clinic that provides HIV/AIDS counseling and free condoms to transsexual sex workers.

The Emergence of Political Homophobia in Indonesia: Masculinity and National Belonging - Tom Boellstorff University of California, Irvine, USA 12/30/04 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
abstractThis paper explores an unprecedented series of violent acts against ?gay?
Indonesians beginning in September 1999. Indonesia is often characterized as ?to-
lerant? of homosexuality. This is a false belief, but one containing a grain of truth. To
identify this grain of truth I distinguish between ?heterosexism? and ?homophobia,?
noting that Indonesia has been marked by a predominance of heterosexism over
homophobia. I examine the emergence of a political homophobia directed at public
events where gay men stake a claim to Indonesia?s troubled civil society. That such
violence is seen as the properly masculine response to these events indicates how
the nation may be gaining a new masculinist cast. In the new Indonesia, male?male
desire can increasingly be construed as a threat to normative masculinity, and thus
to the nation itself.

Algeria: Asylum-seekers fleeing a continuing human rights crisis- Amnesty International 06/01/03 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Grounds for persecution may be attributable not only to activities, beliefs or
associations in Algeria itself, but may also relate to activities, in particular political
and human rights activities, outside Algeria. Indeed, any conduct which is perceived
as opposing the social, religious or political status quo is likely to attract the adverse
attention of the authorities. This includes, for instance, expressions of homosexuality.

Algeria: US Country Reports on Human Rights Practices - 2007, Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor 03/11/08 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Other Societal Abuses and Discrimination<br><br>
The law criminalizes public homosexual behavior and there is no specific legal protection of homosexuals in the country. There was also generally societal discrimination against homosexuals, but not violence or official discrimination. While some homosexuals lived openly, the vast majority did not.
<br><br>AIDS is considered a shameful disease in Algeria. According to March statistics released by the Ministry of Health, 2,100 citizens were HIV-positive and 736 people suffered from AIDS. There were 54 centers offering free services to detect AIDS in Algeria. During the year according to a survey of 30,000 families in the 48 wilayas performed by UNICEF, only 15 percent were aware of means to protect themselves from contracting AIDS. During the year, the health ministry along with the NGO AIDS Algerie launched an AIDS prevention campaign, stressing the need to avoid discrimination, especially in the workplace, against those with HIV/AIDS.

Armenia: US Country Reports on Human Rights Practices - 2007, Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor 03/11/08 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The government's human rights record remained poor, and serious problems remained. Citizens were not able to freely change their government; authorities beat pretrial detainees; the National Security Service (NSS) and the national police force acted with impunity; authorities engaged in arbitrary arrest and detention; prison conditions were cramped and unhealthy, although slowly improving; authorities imposed restrictions on citizens' privacy, freedom of press, and freedom of assembly. Journalists continued to practice self-censorship, and the government and laws restricted religious freedom. Violence against women and spousal abuse remained problems, as well as trafficking in persons, discrimination against persons with disabilities, and societal harassment of homosexuals. There were reports of forced labor.

México, país homofóbico: Fernando del Collado- Mexico, homophobic country: Fernando del Collado- www.elsiglodedurango.com.mx 06/19/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Various things prove what the book "Homophobia, Hate, Crime & Justice 1995-2005", from the journalist Fernando del Collado states. The main one is that the level of hate which exists in the Mexican society against homosexuals, women and the native people has risen to a criminal level, that is to stay, to kill a person for being different is disturbing, and even more, it deals with acts which aren't even classified as hate crimes.

Sri Lanka: Laws proscribing homosexual acts and whether they are applied in practice; the treatment of homosexuals by authorities, by society at large and by the Muslim community- www.unhcr.org 01/17/08 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Legislation and treatment by the authorities<br><br>
Homosexuality is illegal in Sri Lanka (AI July 2006; Freedom House 2006; WSG n.d.a). Under Section 365A of the country's penal code, homosexual acts are punishable by a jail term of up to ten years (Gay Times n.d.; see also AI July 2006). According to the website of Women's Support Group (WSG), a Sri Lankan non-governmental organization (NGO) and "the first women's group in Sri Lanka to dedicate itself to issues of lesbians, bisexual women and transgendered persons," prior to 1995, this law applied only to homosexual men (n.d.a). However, in 1995, the law was amended to be "gender-neutral," resulting in the criminalization of both male and female homosexual activity (WSG n.d.a).

Cameroon: Fighting to Free Those Found "Guilty" of Homosexuality: Christi van der Westhuizen interviews ALICE NKOM, Cameroonian lawyer- www.ipsnews.net - 01/03/09: http://www.ipsnews.net/africa/nota.asp?idnews=45674 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Eighteen-year-old Anatole Zali is at imminent risk of being forcibly returned to Cameroon by the Swiss authorities. Anatole Zali identifies himself as gay, and homosexuality is illegal in Cameroon. If returned he would be at risk of being imprisoned because of his sexual orientation, and Amnesty International would consider him to be a prisoner of conscience. Anatole Zali arrived in Switzerland from Cameroon, on 3 February 2008, and claimed asylum on the grounds that he had been threatened because of his sexual orientation. In Cameroon, Anatole Zali claims to have received threats from the police, initially in Yaounde, the capital, and then in the city of Douala, where he stayed with his (male) cousin for protection. His cousin was later arrested by the police on suspicion of being gay, and an arrest warrant on the same grounds was issued for Anatole Zali. Anatole Zali fled to Switzerland to escape arrest.
