New threat for Ghana's gay community - By Sophia Jones, by http://blog.foreignpolici.com: http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2011/07/21/politician_in_ghana_threatens_to_round_up_the_gays (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Aidoo is not the first high profile person to go on the attack publicly. Reverend Stephen Wengam, a prominent religious figure in Ghana, recently wrote an op-ed for the Ghana Broadcasting Company where he stated: <br>
"If homosexuality is tolerated, very soon the human race will be extinct." <br><br> Ghana News Agency, a media outlet based in Accra, is claiming that homosexuality can lead to HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. While Ghana has recently cut its AIDS rate in half, the disease remains a constant fear of the small West African nation. The homosexual community has now fallen victim to the AIDS blame game.

Homophobia in Honduras, sadly, is rampant. Attacks against homosexuals were worrying way before the coup. <br><br> But after Zelaya was ousted, the crimes grew in number exponentially. According to data from Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, based on local Honduran sexual defense groups, at least 38 people in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered communities were killed since the coup. Most victims were transgendered prostitutes on the streets of Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, the country?s largest cities.

Palestine Resisting homophobia and occupation - by Alex de Jong , IV Online magazine : IV438 - July 2011: http://internationalviewpoint.org/spip.php?page=print_article&id_article=2211 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Haneen Maikey from the Palestinian queer group Al Qaws was in Amsterdam in June talking about their struggles for sexual emancipation and against the Israeli occupation. Alex de Jong spoke with her about being queer and Palestinan and the queer contribution to the Palestinian liberation movement for the Dutch newspaper Grenzeloos. <br><br> Of course, Palestinian society has its particularities: it is very patriarchal for instance. Even a younger brother might expect he has the right to tell his older sister what to do. Another particularity is the taboo on talking about sexuality, even straight people will not talk about it. Talking about homosexuality is a way to push for talking about sexuality in general. We are not hiding we are lesbian, gay or whatever, but talking about sexuality is a precondition for a discussion on these subjects. Some Human Rights or women?s groups might not be willing to be associated with us. But when sexuality in general is an issue, they can?t pretend it?s not an issue for them ? sexuality is not limited to gays. Women?s groups, Human Rights groups, LGBT groups, all have a shared responsibility.

Mexico: Atacan con armas de fuego a comunidad transexual de Chihuahua / Transgender community under attack with fire arms.- by Leonardo Bastida Aguilar, www.notiese.org, on 07/06/11: http://www.notiese.org/notiese.php?ctn_id=5057 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)

The Gulf's gender anxiety Moral panic over transgender men and women is symptomatic of the Gulf's problem with shifting gender roles Rasha Moumneh guardian.co.uk, 07/06/11: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/jul/06/gulf-gender-anxiety-transgender/print (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
As women in the Gulf become more visible, both socially and politically, and as migrants bring with them different ways of living, the region's governments are stepping up their gender policing. To allay fears among conservative elements, they are regulating more tightly what is deemed acceptable behaviour for men and women.
<br><br>
The direct targets of this backlash are those who visibly challenge gender norms ? in particular, boyat (an Arabisation of the English word "boy", generally referring to women with a masculine appearance) together with transgender men and women. <br><br> In 2007, Kuwait criminalised "imitating members of the opposite sex", leading to the arbitrary arrest and detention of hundreds of transgender women. In research in Kuwait this year, Human Rights Watch found that most of those targeted by the police had suffered abuse, torture, sexual assault and harassment at their hands. <br><br> The crossing of gender norms is far more salient in public discourse about boyat and other gender-transgressive individuals. For example, an Emirati psychologist publicly advocated treatment for female masculinity early on, so that it does not lead to homosexuality. Psychologists, social scientists and social commentators treat what they understand as a rejection of women's natural place as a pathology that needs to be contained.

Jamaican lesbian can stay in UK, tribunal rules. A Jamaican lesbian has won the right to stay in the UK after immigration judges ruled she risks persecution if she returns to her home country.- - By BBC News, on 07/06/11: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-14047505 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Her case was reconsidered by the Upper Tribunal's Immigration and Asylum Chamber in London where senior immigration judges said she was "entitled to refugee protection". <br><br>
The case was identified by the judges as one of potential "country guidance" on the issue of the risks to lesbians returning to Jamaica. <br><br> Her lawyers said Jamaica is a "deeply homophobic society" and lesbians, as well as women who are "perceived" as being gay, face a risk of violence including "corrective" rape and murder.
<br><br>
They argued that if the woman returned to Jamaica she would be living as a single woman with no "heterosexual narrative" and would therefore be exposed to such a risk.

Where does one even begin the debate in Pakistan?
How do you get past the literal interpretation of religious texts that leave no room for such a debate?
Islam if read as a monolith, stuck in time and fixed in space, will not allow equal rights to homosexuals.

Pakistani gays flogged in public - by Ashok DEB, http://lgbtbangladesh.wordpress.com, on 12/16/09: http://lgbtbangladesh.wordpress.com/2009/12/16/pakistani-gays-flogged-in-public/ (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The sexual minorities of Pakistan have witnessed grave human rights violation on the grounds of their gender identity or sexual orientation over the past decade. The sodomy legalisation of Pakistan is empowered to condemn the victim to an imprisonment up to 25 years, which itself amounts to a severe violation of basic human rights. Sex between two consenting adults strictly pertains to their own private lifestyle and personal prefferences and could no way be crminalised by justifying through tenents of religion, norms or so-called morality. <br><br>
This video is a glaring example to what extent persons of non-normative gender identities are victimised and humilated in this puritan islamic nation. This video clearly demonstrates the extra-judicial torture the gays had to face in addition to the ruthless anti-homosexuality legalisations. If you watch the clip carefully you can notice that the gay prisoners are boarded off the blue police van. This clearly implies that the victims were under police custody when this public flogging took place. Nowhere in a civilised world could we imagine that the law enforcers actually meant for protecting the rights and dignity of the citizens could hand them over to a group of unruly mob.
