1846.  MUJIGAE KOREA- by Professor Douglas Sanders on 08/03/09 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"ABSTRACT:<br> The existence of homosexuals in South Korea was routinely denied in the past. In the 1990s a number of changes began, notably the expansion of the gay bar scene, a set of activist organizations and public "pride" events. The firing of popular television actor Hong Suk Chun in 2000 was a major public event, giving new visibility to homosexuals. The sensational transsexual star Harisu has also changed public perceptions. The new international support for "human rights" led South Korea to establish a National Human Rights Commission in 2001. The Commission had a mandate to deal with discrimination on the basis of "sexual orientation" and acted positively on that mandate, including funding gay and lesbian organizations to carry out particular programs."

1847.  Philippines- ESSAY : Gay Pride and Prejudice - By Michael Tan Columnist, Philippine Daily Inquirer - on 08/02/09 : http://services.inquirer.net/print/print.php?article_id=20090802-218326 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"Homosexuality (or, to be more precise, homosexual acts) was never illegal in the Philippines and both Filipinos and foreigners often generalize that there?s much tolerance here, pointing to the cross-dressing baklas (and, lately, the very young baklita) swaying down the streets. But discrimination does exist, sometimes accompanied by violence inflicted even by fathers and brothers. Lesbians who are out have also been victimized, sometimes even raped with the perverse reasoning that once a lesbian has ?tasted? a man she would change her sexual orientation."

"The article also reinforces that militias in Iraq are purposefully seeking out LGBTs to assault and degrade them in order to send a clear message to the West against liberation forces. In this way, the already disenfranchised Iraqi LGBT population have become tools of a much greater ideological battle: the resistance of certain extreme groups clinging to power against occupying forces as society threatens to seismically shift around them.
