Ugandan lesbian wins UK asylum court case, will government still try to deport? and SB (Uganda) - approved judgment and case - note - (LGBT in Uganda)- By Paul Canning on madikazemi.blogspot.com, 02/24/10: http://madikazemi.blogspot.com/2010/02/ugandan-lesbian-wins-uk-asylum-court.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"A Ugandan lesbian, known at this stage only as 'SB', has won an asylum court case in the High Court against Home Office arguments that she could safely be deported." <br><br> This showed that there is a check on failed asylum seeker returnees by Ugandan police and that, given the current hostile attitude towards homosexuality, it would be more difficult for SB to bribe her way out of detention (as John Bosco, who was returned by the Home Office, was forced to do), and it's likely that any bribe would be for a considerable sum.<br><br>
Amnesty International said that her history of arrest and detention would mean she would be ?at real risk of harm should she be forcibly returned." Evidence presented of the abuse suffered by lesbians in Ugandan police detention ran the gamut from touching of intimate parts to the threat of being put into a male cell with the consequent risk of rape. <br><br> This document also includes the Approved Judgement.

"At approximately 9:45 PM on the 5th of February, 2010 on Villaflor St. in the district of El Recreo, an operation was carried out by members of the Caracas Police along with members of SUMAT, in meeting places of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, and Trans of the neighborhood. Once again we were able to demonstrate the arbitrary way in which these civil servants ignored, as is customary and systematic, the principles of rationality, commensurate with the use of force, humanity and respect of human rights in their actions, even when the people that were meeting there had not committed any crime."

Discrimination against People with HIV/AIDS in China - Wan Yanhai, Hu Ran, Guo Ran, Linda Arnade, The Equal Rights Review, Volume Four (2009)- 02/22/10: http://www.equalrightstrust.org/ertdocumentbank/errissue04.pdf (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"The employment experience for people with
HIV is similar to the experience of students in
schools. It is not uncommon for a worker who
has tested positive for HIV to be persuaded to
leave work. In some informal and small-scale
privately-owned companies, people who are
HIV positive are often dismissed outright on
the grounds that they have HIV. "
<br><br>
"At hospitals patients living with HIV/AIDS
often experience discriminatory treatment
from doctors or nurses if their status is dis-
closed or revealed. Although regulations ex-
ist which require doctors to protect an HIV-
positive person?s privacy and provide them
with the same medical treatment as other
patients, in practice privacy is widely denied.
Furthermore, doctors and surgeons often refuse to treat or operate on patients who are HIV-positive."

Panfletos y Limpieza Social. Efectos mortales y no mortales - Pamphlets and Social Cleansing. Mortal and non mortal effects. - by Carlos H. Fernández and Silvia Otero Bahamón- www.cinep.org.co, on 07/31/09: http://www.cinep.org.co/node/722 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"Distributed in photocopiers, left on bus seats and placed in the doorways of homes in different neighborhoods, the pamphlets have spread throughout the main cities of the country and dozens of municipalities and there is even an internet site which promotes them. The standard version, directed to youth, prostitutes, transvestites, sellers and users of drugs, thieves and homosexuals, announce that "The hour of social cleansing has arrived" and recommends to the citizenry that they stay home more and that parents talk with their children."<br><br>
"The debate about the authors and the motivations ends up with the deaths. Community leaders and youth have shown in various spaces that there are mortal victims of the threats, but no one dares to denounce nor complain out of fear of retaliation. Before these statements, last May the Home Secretary of Bogotá. responded that if there were no victims nor complaints, it was very difficult to do anything. Exactly, there lies the limitation in the document of this phenomenon, since both authorities and social organizations agree that it is difficult to establish when a homicide is due to a threat of "social cleansing."

Turkey: Stop Violence Against Transgender People - IGLHRC on 02/22/10: http://www.iglhrc.org/cgi-bin/iowa/article/pressroom/pressrelease/1096.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"(Ankara, February 22, 2010)?The recent murders of two transgender women in Turkey highlight an ongoing pattern of violence and the urgent need for stronger protection measures by the government, four Turkish and international human rights organizations said today in a letter to Turkish authorities." <br><br>
"The groups called on Turkey to remedy the conditions that place transgender people at risk from acts of violence by enacting anti-discrimination protections, instituting programs to combat prejudice and hatred, and repealing laws that provide an opportunity for police to harass stigmatized groups. The letter was sent by Pembe Hayat "Pink Life," Human Rights Watch, the European Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA-Europe), and the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC)."

RIGHTS-COLOMBIA: Where Homophobia Totes a Gun By Mario Osava, ipsnews.net on 12/02/08: http://ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=44953 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
BOGOTA, Dec 2 , 2008 (IPS) - Homosexuals can remain in the closet and not be noticed, but that is not an acceptable alternative for transgender people who suffer violence to a greater extent in Colombia, where armed combatants in the conflicts too often turn prejudice into murder.<br><br>
"We are not interested in hiding our sexual preference," and in this country "killing is easier" than in others, said Diana Navarro, the head of Corporación Opción, an organisation that works for the rights of prostitutes and transgender people, a term used in Colombia to refer to transvestites, transsexuals and cross-dressers. <br><br>
"I am attacked for being black, transgender, a prostitute, and for speaking out," the activist told IPS. Her complaints of abuses against her community made an impact at the International Seminar on Human Rights, Sexual Diversity and State Policies, held Nov. 26-27 in Bogotá.

"That sect of Islam presently dominates Iran, Iraq and Yemen. Dr. Bostom again brings into bright contrast the cultural differences that somehow must be reconciled before peace breaks out in this world. It isn't helpful that Iraq's most powerful Shi'a cleric, al Sistani wants to kill all homosexuals and lesbians in the worst possible way and preaches that to his followers as immutable law."

Yemeni Jihaddists Murder Three Gay Men - by mypetjawa.mu.nu on 01/17/09: http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/195891.php (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"The militants appointed themselves judge, jury and executioner. The murder of the gay men is the same as the murder of the Jewish rabbi last month. In both instances, the militants justify their murder of minorities as a public service. The fanatical intolerance fostered by the neo-Salafis requires the extermination of "enemies" where enemies are defined as anyone who holds a different world view or refuses to submit to their totalitarianism. The jihaddists have growing control over various territory in Yemen that is distinct from the "ungoverned tribal regions" often noted as a security concern. The Talibanizaton of Yemen is more than a territorial expansion, its also a penetration of government structures and social mores."

"The interesting thing is: as soon as there is a bit interest in the media about such things, the government gets nervous about it. And then the conservatives say, you see, you stirred up some trouble, let's stop it now before it gets out of our hands and we can't control it any longer. The Chinese government is really very much afraid of losing control of anything which is happening in society." <br><br> Damm says much is anchored in tradition, "Asian values, Chinese values are very much oriented towards family, towards procreation, towards the ancestors. The idea is that the most important thing for a Chinese family is that there are children. The idea that there can be children within gay and lesbian families has not yet arrived in China. So it is a quasi-religious feeling, that this is broken and kind of unnatural."
