Iranian LGBT: Persecuted, harassed, raped, tortured, threatened with death, forced into operations - By Paul Canning on madikazemi.blogspot.com on 03/02/10: http://madikazemi.blogspot.com/2010/03/iranian-lgbt-persecuted-harassed-raped.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"However many transgender surgeries are actually performed on gay men who report being coerced. They and actual Iranian transgendered people report being persecuted, tortured and coerced to undergo sex reassignment procedure."

"Many of those Iranians undergoing operations end up far worse off because of carelessly performed or even incomplete reassignment procedures and absent pre-surgery counseling."

" Despite the government's theoretical acceptance of transgender people, like gays and lesbians, they are always in danger of getting beaten and arrested by the unaccountable Basiji forces (a paramilitary volunteer militia). Transgender people have been deemed 'criminal by the Basiji and delivered to Mafased, the organization responsible for dealing with 'moral corruption', which can imprison people for days and subject them to physical and psychological torture."

Jamaica: Asylum Win for Gay Pro Bono Client- by www.proskauer.com on 12/15/09: http://www.proskauer.com/news/december-15-2009/ (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"As part of the asylum process, it is necessary to prepare a "declaration" or life story. This was very difficult for the man, whose memories of life in Jamaica were deeply suppressed and painful to discuss. Through hours of interviews and numerous meetings, Ms. Lerner was able to convince him to share his story for the declaration and in preparation for the hearing. Two weeks after the hearing, he learned that he had been granted asylum."

OBSTACLES FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF LESBIAN, TRANSVESTITE AND BISEXUAL WOMEN'S RIGHTS IN COLOMBIA- by Colombia Diversa on 03/05/10: http://ilga.org/ilga/en/article/mjMbW7R1aE (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"There is little information regarding the status of human rights of lesbian and bisexual women in Colombia. Difficulties related with the inexistence of state information systems or human rights organizations that include variables on the sexual orientation and gender identity of the victims, prevents the work of human rights defenders to shed some light on the real situation of this population."

Violence and police abuse
For the years 2006- 2007 Colombia Diversa reports the murder of at least 17 transvestites dedicated to prostitution. These women are also the main victims of police abuse together with people who make their sexual orientation evident in public, such as same sex couples.

"Homophobia runs high but gay life carries on openly, hidden or appreciated in different parts of the country. But only one LGBT organization stands against HIV and discrimination."

Not unlike other Latin American countries, Panama has a strong prejudice against homosexuality. ?There are no gay rights here,? declared Ricardo Beteta, director of Panama?s only LGBT advocacy organization, AHMNP (Asociación Hombres y Mujeres Nuevos de Panama, ?New Men and Women of Panama?).

"Many Latin American countries boast socially advanced legislation when it comes to defending sexual freedom and orientation. With law reform in Nicaragua and Panama over the past 12 months, there are now no states in Latin America which criminalize homosexual relations, for example.

"Yet perhaps influenced by a lingering ?machismo?, prejudice and discrimination continue to flourish, whatever the laws say. Latin America is widely regarded as having a long way to go to successfully counter homophobia, or ?fear or hatred of homosexuals.?

?There is a real contrast between reality and theory. This is the developing region of the world with the highest number of laws against discrimination based on sexual orientation,? says Dr. Ruben Mayorga, UNAIDS Country Coordinator for Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay."

Amid family pressures, gays in China turn to marriages of convenience In China, where homosexuality remains taboo, many gays enter marriages of convenience to satisfy family pressure to wed and have children. While they act like a couple in front of their families, many don't live together.- By Zhang Yajun on www.csmonitor.com/ on 04/13/10: http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Asia-Pacific/2010/0413/Amid-family-pressures-gays-in-China-turn-to-marriages-of-convenience (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The pressure to marry is greater in rural areas, such as in Xiaojian?s home village on the outskirts of Beijing, where his relatives and neighbors keep close watch. Stay single too long, and gossip begins to spread about possible physical or mental disabilities. Constant questioning ensues. For some jobs, such as in the military and civil service, marriage is a requirement for promotion.

Adding to the pressure to obey, many young adults rely on their parents for financial support. The average Beijing salary of 3,700 yuan (about $550) is barely enough to live on in the increasingly expensive capital.

Senegal: Even after death, abuse against gays continues - By Associated Press on http://news.bostonherald.com on 04/11/10: (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"THIES, Senegal ? Even death cannot stop the violence against gays in this corner of the world any more.

Madieye Diallo?s body had been in the ground for only a few hours when the mob descended on the weedy cemetery with shovels. They yanked out the corpse, spit on its torso, dragged it away and dumped it in front of the home of his elderly parents."

In the past two years, at least four men suspected of being gay have been exhumed by angry mobs in cemeteries in Senegal. The violence is especially shocking because Senegal, unlike other countries in the region, is considered a model of tolerance.

"In the last year alone, gay men have been arrested in Kenya, Malawi, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. In Uganda, lawmakers are considering a bill that would sentence homosexuals to life in prison and include capital punishment for "repeat offenders." And in South Africa, the only country that recognizes gay rights, gangs have carried out so-called "corrective" rapes on lesbians."

"Walk for Tolerance" Calls for End to Bigotry in Jamaica - by AIDS Free World on 04/08/10: http://www.aids-freeworld.org/content/view/367/135/ (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"If anyone is in doubt about the significance of this event, we would like to point out that it is the first of its kind in Jamaica, a country internationally notorious for its vicious homophobia. If anyone is in doubt about the courage of the people who participated, we would like to point to Jamaica?s abysmal human rights record with sexual minorities. Five years ago, Steve Harvey, a senior JASL employee, was murdered for being gay. Jamaica is one of the 79 countries with homophobic laws, and public figures spew hateful anti-gay diatribes with impunity. Just last year the Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, made disparaging remarks about gay people and announced that he has no intention of repealing the country?s sodomy laws."
