First-Ever Legal Challenge to Jamaica?s Anti-Gay Laws - Press Release, Maurice Tomlinson for AIDS-Free Wold, www.aidsfreeworld.org, on 10/26/11: http://hosted.verticalresponse.com/594745/6d9c27626b/317679163/342f8f9b70/ (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The so-called ?anti-sodomy law? in Jamaica has cast a destructive pall over the lives of gay Jamaicans. It has fed a homophobic society in which gays and lesbians are harassed, mocked, vilified, beaten and killed simply because of their sexual orientation. Driven underground, many fear that seeking an HIV test will brand them as homosexual, and therefore criminal. The national prevalence of HIV is over 30 percent among men who have sex with men, compared to a rate of 1.6 percent in the general population. The petition establishes clear ties between the country?s active promotion of discrimination and its AIDS epidemic. <br><br>
Tragically and unconscionably, the Government of Jamaica is determined to sustain its discriminatory legislation. The petition brought by AIDS-Free World makes clear that this law tramples on the American Convention on Human Rights, to which Jamaica is a party, and violates numerous guarantees contained in other international treaties that the country has signed and ratified. Jamaica?s law legitimizes abuses against homosexuals by state actors, including the police. It also encourages vigilante justice by private citizens, most of whom believe that the ?anti-sodomy? law grants them permission to commit acts of violence against sexual minorities. Because the Government and its highest officials support and enable homophobia, the only possible way to end the persistent violation of the human rights of gay Jamaicans is to strike down the law as soon as possible and usher in an era of tolerance. Sexual Minorities Persecuted In Iran - The Iranian government has a deplorable record of persecuting members of Iran's gay, lesbian and transgender, community.- by Voice of America, on 10/25/11: http://www.voanews.com/policy/editorials/Sexual-Minorities-Persecuted-In-Iran-132550373.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
According to the Norway?based NGO Iran Human Rights, the Iranian
Student News Agency said that on September 4 three men were convicted
of 'unlawful acts' and acts against Sharia, based on articles 108 and
110 of the Islamic penal code. Iran Human Rights noted that "Articles
108 and 110 of the Iranian Islamic Penal code are part of the chapter
covering 'Hadd' for sodomy. . . .Article 110 says punishment for
sodomy is killing." <br><br>
The three men, identified only by initials, were also charged with
kidnapping and theft. Because of the variety of charges and the lack
of due process in Iran ? summary trials, the disregard for the right
to defense counsel, and the practice of accusing political prisoners
of criminal activity -- there is no way to know why these men were
hanged. <br><br>
The Iranian government has a deplorable record of persecuting members
of Iran's gay, lesbian and transgender, community -- the size of which
remains unknown, since many individuals fear identifying themselves. [1]

New York, October 25, 2011?Columbia Law School?s Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic has won asylum in the United States for Ahmed A., a gay man who feared persecution because of his sexual orientation if he had been forced to return to his native Mauritania. <br><br>? ?The grant of asylum, issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, highlights the perils for gay people who live in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, a country in West Africa. In Mauritania, homosexuality is punishable by death?both by the government and by the powerful tribal communities that regulate Mauritanian society.? <br><br>?Mauritania is one of five countries in the world?along with Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Yemen?that impose the death penalty for being gay. In addition, 76 countries prosecuted people based on their sexual orientation as of last year, underscoring the global reach of the practice of state persecution of gay people.

Gay Iraqi victim of raid on 2010 Karbala safe house with slashed throat -By Paul Canning, on 09/07/11: http://madikazemi.blogspot.com/2011/09/un-reports-on-violent-attacks-on-lgbt.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Document also includes an excerpt from a report , released by the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the U.N. Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) on Jan 2011. <br><br>
The treatment of minorities was also heavily covered in the report. <br><br>
The report says that during the Universal Periodic Review at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva in February 2010, Iraq expressly and officially rejected calls by UN member States to act to protect persons on account of their sexual orientation or gender identity, and to investigate homophobic hate crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.
<br><br>
It said:
"UNAMI continued to receive reports during 2010 of attacks against individuals based on their perceived or actual sexual orientation. The topic of homosexuality is largely taboo in Iraq and seen as incompatible with the country?s culture and religion." <br><br>
"Members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community usually keep their sexual orientation secret and live in constant fear of discrimination, rejection by family members, social ostracism, and violence. The Iraqi Penal Code does not expressly prohibit homosexual relations between consenting adults. However, a variety of less specific, flexible provisions in the Iraqi Penal Code leave room for active discrimination and prosecution of LGBT persons and feeds societal intolerance. Police and courts regularly take into account the alleged homosexuality of the victim as a mitigating factor in relation to crimes committed against persons on account of their perceived or real sexual orientation."

70 homosexuals are murdered every year - The last victim was asphyxiated, decapitated, stabbed, burned and then discarded in a garbage bag and then left at the Atocongo bridge - by Eduardo Salinas, www.larepublica.pe, on 10/07/11: http://www.larepublica.pe/07-10-2011/asesinan-70-homosexuales-cada-ano (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)

Mounting violence haunts South Africa's gays and mobilizes activists Rainbow nation besieged by attacks including 'corrective rape' against lesbians. This year a series of highly publicized attacks in Pretoria, Cape Town and the Johannesburg area ? including the rape and murder of lesbian activist Noxolo Nogwaza in the same township where national women?s soccer team captain Eudy Simelane was killed in 2008 ? have pushed ?corrective rape? back into the headlines and spurred the South African government to convene an interim task force on gender-based violence and to establish another task force to draft hate crimes legislation. [1] <br><br> The statistics on ?corrective rape? are extremely difficult to document, though activists and researchers agree reported cases appear to be on the rise as more lesbian women break their silence and report their attacks to police. There may also be a ?copycat effect? occurring, said Dipika Nath, a researcher for Human Rights Watch?s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Program. [2]

Dominican Republic: Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor 2010 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices- on 04/08/11 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Societal Abuses, Discrimination, and Acts of Violence Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity <br><br>
Treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals ranged from ambivalent tolerance to staunch homophobia. While no law criminalizes homosexuality, members of the LGBT community continued to be discriminated against in all areas of society, including health, education, and work, since no law protects individuals against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. <br><br>Transgender individuals were particularly at risk of being victims of violence.
NGOs reported widespread social discrimination against persons based on sexual orientation. Numerous credible reports indicated members of the LGBT community were expelled from public school, arrested without reason, fired from work, or denied access to rent or own homes.<br><br>
Gay and lesbian persons faced physical attacks, intimidation, harassment, and threats of violence. NGOs reported that these groups were reluctant to file charges or complain to authorities due to fear of reprisal or humiliation. Several killings during the year were linked to the victims' sexual orientation.
